when you go outside the u.s., i agree that the u.s. market is generally more pricey than the rest of the world. europe having gone through the crisis or still going through the crisis is exhibiting a lot of value plays there. there's a lot of attractive opportunities there. >> so are you among those that are starting to nibble at europe right now in the equity market? >> in terms of on the u.s. front, i think we're going to be a lot more cautious. we're seeing estimates in the last four or five weeks of cuts. we think there's more to come. with europe, i think we have to be a lot more selective. there is -- i think the pull back on the consumer side, the last we looked, says that the valuations on the consumer side in europe looks a lot better. on the u.s. front, though, we think that what's striking is the level of estimate cuts we've seen in the u.s. in the last four, five weeks. it's going in the face of the way the tape's been going. this is very unusual. >> we are seeing strength into what's expected to be a weak earnings report.

but at other times when the rest of the world is falling apart and the u.s. looks pretty darn good by comparison, you need a stock that gives you domestic security, something that's entirely confined within our borders because at those moments being exposed to the rest of the world is downright dangerous. what do i mean by domestic security? anything that's usa all the way. you can own a phone company like at&t or verizon. how about an electric utility like con-ed or pick a regional international chain or a dollar store like dollar general. how about a real estate investment trust, tanger factory outlets, seen those companies over and over, why, because they have been winners or own the ayrs. the point is that in terms of international turmoil this slot in your portfolio should be filled by something that's all domestic, and in times of domestic turmoil where the rest of the world was in much better shape, which is where we were after the financial crisis, then maybe you want to own a foreign company. always own a stock that's from a safe geography. sometimes
